As research abundantly demonstrates, play is the true work of childhood. At Wild Lilac CDC, the children play freely in intentional learning environments with open-ended toys and materials that encourage imagination, connection, and creativity. Children engage in exploration of art, science, music, language, and play as a coactive group while being honored for their individual interests and passions. Our teachers help the children maintain an environment of mutual care, respect and appreciation by modeling unconditional care and respect while empowering the children to create and uphold their own agreements. Wild Lilac’s approach to curriculum celebrates children’s curiosity and offers authentic experiences that enrich and deepen children’s connections to each other and the world around them.

At Wild Lilac CDC, our approach to education is based on creative, social processes. Building, inventing, dramatic play, baking, music-making, gardening and a wild array of art projects happen on a daily basis. These projects arise organically from the children’s ideas and interests and are supported by inspiring classroom spaces and by teachers who offer small group invitations to go deeper. Children are welcome to choose their level of involvement in these everyday invitations, and we all strive to enjoy the process of creating things of beauty and meaning without imposing expectations about the project’s results onto each other. In this way we are able to offer a supportive environment that encourages innovation and creative risk-taking for all of our children.
